Westminster Window Reflections
😅Westminster Window Reflections learned a lot over the past week.
For instance, a frequent city council dissenter issued a warning about the Colorado Connector commuter rail project; that same naysayer is running for a seat in the Colorado State House; various special interest groups are backing Democratic candidates in the 8th Congressional District primary, and one busy burglar is facing jail time.
🥳 One thing that surprised me while reporting this week: How much Front Range Community College consistently supports its students. The Front Range system - which includes its Westminster campus - was given the Comprehensive Campus for Basic Needs Designation by the Colorado Department of Higher Education for building a “robust, integrated ecosystem to ensure no student is forced to choose between their education and their next meal.” The college provides a food pantry for students as well as mental health counseling, childcare subsidies and emergency grants.

Councilor Ireland parts ways with the Colorado Connector
🚉 Why it matters: Westminster City Councilors were asked this week to sign onto a letter supporting the Colorado Connector commuter rail line, which will supposedly link Westminster with Denver and the rest of the northern Front Range.
What’s happening: Councilor Kristine Ireland said she would not sign the letter, saying she has doubts over the cost of the rail line and whether ridership will support the venture. The Front Range Passenger Rail District is continuing to lobby the north Front Range city councils for support for the rail line.

Westminster’s Ireland takes on a Democratic incumbent
✌ Why it matters: The House District 29 seat has been filled by a Democrat for years, including Westminster’s Shannon Bird. And when Bird vacated the seat this year to run for Congress, a Democratic vacancy committee filled the slot with Adams 12 Five Star board chair Lori Goldstein. Goldstein faces no opponent in the Democratic primary on June 30.
What’s happening: Kristine Ireland began her term on the Westminster City Council in 2023 and earned the reputation as a “Water Warrior” for her work in keeping water rates down in the city. Ireland, a Republican, now wants to take on Goldstein and put the House District 29 seat on the GOP side.

🤑 Money, money, money in 8th District race
What to know: Democrats Manny Rutinel and Shannon Bird spent $1.5 million and $1.2 million, respectively, in the roughly three months before the June 10 deadline for campaign finance disclosures. Colorado Public Radio states that both campaigns have seen outside groups spend millions in the primary race, with Rutinel getting support from Latino groups and a tech businessman-backed PAC. A PAC supporting women candidates has supported Bird.
Next step: The June 30 primary is closing in for both candidates.
