🤯 Council sees limits to its power

Frustrated City Councilors this week called for an executive session to talk about their legal options in handling complaints about alleged disorderly conduct at the Rodeo Convention Center at 8991 St.

Neighbors have complained about Rodeo patrons spilling out onto the parking lot, drunkenly fighting each other and shooting weapons.

Councilors learned that those complaints have to be first handled by the police and then can be forwarded to the Special Permit and Licensing Board.

Stay tuned for when that executive session will be held.

Westminster is not happy with the goings on at the Rodeo Convention Center

😕 One thing that surprised me while reporting

The Pride flag (front and center) now flies above city hall

This week: Feelings are still running hot over Westminster’s decision to erect a Pride flag outside of the city hall.

The flag - which signals alliance with the LGBTQ community - now stands alongside the U.S., Colorado and City of Westminster flags. Some residents say the Pride flag represents a special interest group and should not receive such lofty, government-sanctioned recognition.

City Councilor Kristine Ireland was the lone “no” vote for hoisting the Pride flag. And during last Saturday’s budget study session, she polled her colleagues about posting a Christian flag to fly outside city hall.

“Every council member voted against it,” Ireland said. The issue is unlikely to be put to bed anytime soon.

🚔 Westminster Police get help handling Fentanyl

Why it matters: Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opioid that is similar to morphine but is 50 to 100 times more potent and, if ingested, can have deadly consequences for users, say law enforcement.

What’s happening: City Councilors this week approved a federal application to get a handheld narcotics analyzer that will prevent exposure to Fentanyl. Officers can take it into the field and scan unknown white powders on the scene prior to making arrests or decisions related to hazardous material handling, according to the city.

🛣 Work starts on voter-approved repaving projects

Why it matters: Ballot Measure 3H raised sales taxes this year to fund emergency services and repave neighborhood streets. The city launched its first neighborhood repaving projects in April and is part of a larger, coordinated investment strategy in Historic Westminster, say city officials.

What’s happening: The repaving of the Apple Blossom neighborhood, off 80th Avenue and Lowell Boulevard in Historic Westminster, officially kicked off the 2026 paving season as part of the street rehabilitation program.

🌳 Westminster will take in tree limbs that did not survive the snowstorm

😇 The issue: The wet, heavy snow on May 6 claimed plenty of tree limbs in Westminster, prompting the city to hold an emergency tree limb recycling event Saturday, May 16.

Context: Residents can drop off their damaged limbs from 8 a.m. to noon at the Brauch property - 10001 Alkire Street. The service will be free for Westminster residents only. Anyone bringing limbs for drop off must bring proof of residency.
